Document Transfer of Ownership
How It Works
Codel can offer two means of recording transfer of ownership. The first is anonymous and free of charge. All that is required is that the current owner pass a copy of their current one time key to the new owner. The new owner posts the appropriate new record to Codel using the Codel Document Protection Software. From that point on, the audit trail for the document is under control of the new key owner. Codel never destroys a record. It would break our audit trail. But we can add records to change the status of a protected item and allow interrogators to view the history of any changes to the record. With a change of Ownership - for example, the assignment of Copyright to a 3rd party - the first record would include the claim of authorship and date of creation, the second would show claim of copyright and date of transfer of rights. Neither record would show anything sensitive - such as the identity of the author or the copyright holder. But either of those individuals can use the Codel system to prove their status as author or copyright holder. This simple system works well in cases where it is in both parties interests to record their actions and confirm their status. It doesn't work so well in a potential dispute situation, where one party may be reluctant to confirm either sending or receiving a particular document and a court decision may hinge on the evidence that a document was sent or received by a specific named person. For this situation, we recommend our Email Validation protocol. This is designed literally to make it impossible for a recipient to read a message/document unless they have acknowledged receipt in a manner which would be recognised by a court. |
